Johnsonville Fossil Plant

What TVA is doing about emissions at Johnsonville

TVA has taken a number of steps to make the efficient generation of power at Johnsonville as clean as possible:

  • The plant burns a low-sulfur blend of coal to limit emissions of sulfur dioxide.
  • Four Johnsonville units use low-NOX burners to reduce the production of nitrogen oxides that contribute to the formation of ozone and acid rain. Johnsonville was the first plant in the TVA system to install such burners. Boiler optimization controls, which burn the coal more thoroughly and efficiently, limit the production of NOx at the plant’s six other units.
  • In support of recent environmental agreements and its vision of being one of the nation’s leading providers of low-cost and cleaner energy by 2020, TVA will retire six units at Johnsonville no later than Dec. 31, 2015. The remaining four units will be retired no later than Dec. 31, 2017.
