Caney River Wind Energy Project

Elk County, Kansas

On May 13, 2011, TVA issued a final environmental assessment (EA) and finding of no significant impact (FONSI) for the purchase of power from the Caney River Wind Project located in Elk County, Kansas.  Consistent with TVA’s planning for its energy future, the Caney Wind Project would provide TVA with 200 MW of clean and renewable wind energy for a 20-year period.  Construction would begin in 2011 and the project would be operational by the end of 2012.  The wind project would consist of 111 wind turbines situated within a Project area of about 13, 618 acres.  The EA considered the impacts of taking no action and those for the proposed action of entering into a finalized agreement for the purchase of power, as well as construction and operation of the facility.

TVA made the draft EA available to the public and agencies for review and comment from October 11 to November 26, 2010.  In response to comments received, TVA revised the EA, incorporated additional analysis and reissued it to provide a second opportunity for public and agency comment between April 1 and April 15, 2011.  Each time, TVA placed notices in local and regional news media, placed copies in local libraries and made the EA available on its external web site.
