TVA awards 2009 scholarships

Sixteen recipients of TVA Employee Dependent Scholarships have been selected. Ten of the scholarships, worth up to $5,000 per year and renewable for up to four additional years, are for four-year baccalaureate degrees. The other six scholarships, worth up to $2,500 and renewable for one year, are for two-year associate degrees.

Scholarship America, a national nonprofit educational-support and student-aid services organization, selected the winners from a pool of 137 applicants. The scholarships are merit-based, taking into account applicants’ high-school grade-point averages, standardized test scores, leadership/extracurricular activities and honors/distinctions, as well as alignment with TVA workforce needs according to an applicant’s declared college major.

Here are the scholarship winners for 2009, along with their TVA parent’s name:

Molly Beavers, daughter of Shawnee Fossil Plant employee Ronald Beavers. Molly plans to attend the University of Kentucky with a major in chemical engineering.

Andrew Bowling, son of Watts Bar Nuclear Plant employee Richard Bowling. Andrew plans to attend Pellissippi State Community College with a major in pre-nuclear engineering.

Jeremy Clothier, son of Watts Bar Nuclear Plant employee Walter Clothier. Jeremy plans to attend Tennessee Technological University with a major in environmental science.

Scott Fenton, son of Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant employee Jeffrey Fenton. Scott plans to attend Samford University with a major in human resources.

Christopher Freye, son of Watts Bar Nuclear Plant employee David Freye. Christopher plans to attend the University of Tennessee-Knoxville with a major in chemical engineering.

Joshua Hill, son of Muscle Shoals Power Systems Operations employee Stephen Hill. Joshua plans to attend Northwest-Shoals Community College with a major in pre-engineering.

Callie Howard, daughter of Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant employee Thomas Stephens. Callie plans to attend the University of North Alabama with a major in chemistry.

Carol Lee, daughter of Muscle Shoals Office of Environment & Research employee Kwok-Choi Patrick Lee. Carol plans to attend Auburn University with a major in biology.

Heather Owens, daughter of Johnsonville Fossil Plant employee Hayley Owens. Heather plans to attend Nashville State Community College with a major in process-control techonology.

Tyrell Parrish, son of Chattanooga Information Systems employee Gloria Pogue. Tyrell plans to attend Morehouse College with a major in finance.

Brandon Rader, son of Chattanooga Customer Service employee Timothy Rader. Brandon plans to attend Cleveland State Community College with a major in business.

Colin Ritter, son of Colbert Fossil Plant employee Johnny Ritter. Colin plans to attend Northwest-Shoals Community College with a major in technology.

Allie Scalf, daughter of Johnson City Customer Service employee Michael Scalf. Allie plans to attend Vanderbilt University with a major in biology.

Elizabeth Simbeck, daughter of Muscle Shoals Office of Environment & Research employee Damien Simbeck. Elizabeth plans to attend the University of Alabama-Birmingham with a major in telecommunications.

Chelsey Smith, daughter of Chattanooga Facilities Management employee David Smith. Chelsey plans to attend Vanderbilt University with a major in engineering.

Matthew Thompson, son of Chattanooga River Operations employee David Thompson. Matthew plans to attend Auburn University with a major in electrical engineering.
