Miles away

Corinth CSC supports the troops

On Veterans Day Nov. 11 and throughout the year, TVA honors and appreciates its 2,240 active employees with military service – as well as retiree veterans and active-duty employees. The Corinth, Miss., line crew office is just one group of employees that shows its support for the troops.

From left, Linecrew Foreman Kenneth Sims, TransCom Principal Engineer Pamela Brown and Electrician Foreman Brian Choate were among the Corinth employees who “adopted” Justin Miles.

Infantry Marine LCpl. Justin Miles is one lucky guy. Not only does he have one dad – Corinth, Miss., Lineman Jesse Miles – supporting him in Iraq but he has 10 other “adoptive parents,” as well.

“Justin joined the Marines right after graduating high school in 2006 and was deployed in March ’08,” says Jesse Miles. “Since it’s impossible to help all the troops, work groups are ‘adopting’ soldiers and sending care packages during their deployment.”

Jesse Miles (left) visits with his son Justin at Camp Lejeune, N.C., in October.

The group in Miles’ office decided to “adopt” his son. They pooled their money to buy a 60-pound kick bag, two speed bags, boxing gloves and mouth pieces, as well as toiletries and protein mix, to help the troops endure the 110-130-degree Fahrenheit weather.

“There’s not much they can do in their spare time on base except lift weights and work out,” Miles says. “It doesn’t seem like much to us, but they were excited about the new bags.”

The group also mailed boxes with items such as microwave popcorn, jerky, cool wraps to put around their necks to keep cooler and magazines.

“I want the Corinth group to know how much I appreciate their support,” Miles says. Justin Miles’ group returned home Oct.16 and will prepare for another deployment in a few months.

The Corinth group wants the troops and Justin to know how much they appreciate the work they are doing for their country.

“We did this because Jesse is our fellow worker,” says Line Foreman Kenneth Sims. “His son wasn’t the only one who benefited. We did this in support of all the troops.”
