PSO disaster relief

Helping friends in need

After the powerful winds and rains of Hurricane Gustav hit Louisiana in late August, the Dixie Electric Membership Corp. called TVA for help.

“Thousands of customers were out of service,” says Tracy Flippo, general manager for area operations in Transmission Operations & Maintenance.

Within days, 17 TOM linemen, 22 crew members from Electric System Projects, four TVA Police officers, a Human Resources Safety staff member and a Heavy Equipment Division mechanic were hard at work in Greenwell Springs and Zachary, La., about 20 miles north of Baton Rouge.

Wayne Byron, lineman with the TOM Johnson City line crew, repairs electrical distribution lines damaged by Hurricane Gustav.

“The TVA Police provided traffic control and security while these folks worked 16-hour days, replacing transmission-line structures, restringing wire and replacing distribution circuits,” says John Hitchcock, Transmission Services manager in Johnson City, Tenn.
