TVA Green Power Program Ranks in Top TenApril 15, 2002 Green Power Switch, an accredited renewable energy program offered by TVA and distributors of TVA power, has earned two top 10 national rankings, making it a leading utility green-pricing program. The U.S. Department of Energys National Renewable Energy Laboratory ranked Green Power Switch eighth in the nation for the amount of new energy produced and 10th in the nation for the number of customers participating. The success of Green Power Switch is a result of the outstanding support it receives from distributors of TVA power and from the people of the Tennessee Valley who have made the choice to buy electricity generated from renewable sources, said TVA Chairman Glenn McCullough Jr. We are proud of our top-10 rankings and pleased that our program, in its second year, compares favorably with programs throughout the country that have been in existence much longer. TVA currently generates 6.2 megawatts of green power from 12 solar sites throughout the TVA service area, one wind park in East Tennessee, a landfill gas facility in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and from methane gas at the Allen Fossil Plant in Memphis. Currently, more than 5,000 residential customers and about 225 business customers are purchasing more than 14,500 blocks of green power, which is now being offered by 29 local power companies. The success of Green Power Switch is a wonderful example of the concern customers have for the environment and for how their energy is produced, says Southern Alliance for Clean Energy Associate Director Libby Hill. It is obvious that when customers are offered a well-designed and supported program, they make a choice for clean power. Green Power Switch is sold to residential consumers in 150-kilowatt-hour blocks (about 12 percent of a typical households monthly energy use). Consumers can buy as many blocks as they like, with each block adding $4 to the customers monthly power bill. Green Power Switch is also available to business and industrial customers, who can buy blocks based on the amount of energy they use. For more information go to the Green Power Switch page. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
