TVA Committed To Supporting Economic Growth in Kentucky

June 22, 2004

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. – TVA plays a substantial role in the Kentucky economy and is committed to being an agent of economic growth in the state and throughout the Tennessee Valley, TVA Chairman Glenn McCullough Jr. said today.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Hopkinsville/Christian County Chamber of Commerce, McCullough encouraged community leaders to work together to improve the quality of life in the region and promote economic growth.

“TVA is proud to be a partner in envisioning a future of continuing prosperity for this area,” said McCullough. “Hopkinsville is a community that knows where it’s going, and we at TVA are committed to helping you and the commonwealth of Kentucky achieve your goals.”

Every year TVA buys about one-third of its coal – almost 14 million tons – from Kentucky providing more than $360 million in revenue to an industry responsible for 19,000 jobs. At the same time, TVA is investing $1 million a day in clean-air equipment at its 11 fossil plants, including Shawnee and Paradise fossil plants in Kentucky.

McCullough said that coal is a plentiful, economic source of electricity, and because of the latest emission-control technologies it can be a cleaner power source.

TVA provides power to 18 municipal and electric co-operatives, including Hopkinsville Electric System and Pennyrile Rural Electric Cooperative, which serve 250,000 homes and more than 43,000 commercial and industrial customers in Kentucky. In addition, TVA supplies power directly to 16 large industrial customers in Kentucky and to Fort Campbell.

McCullough challenged the audience, as leaders of the community, to take the next step and guide Hopkinsville and Christian County to the next level of growth and prosperity.

“You are the people who have the vision to see the full potential of your community and understand that the plans and partnerships we forge today determine how the headlines read in 2009,” he told Chamber members.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.5 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
