TVA, Outfitters Reach Agreement on Upper Ocoee Releases
June 22, 2005
DUCKTOWN, Tenn. – TVA will release water on the Upper Ocoee River
for 43 days of recreation this year, including Saturdays through Sept. 24 and
Sundays through Sept. 4.
“TVA is pleased an agreement on this year’s recreational releases could
be reached,” said TVA Senior Vice President for River Operations Janet Herrin.
“This solution recognizes the importance of recreational use of the Upper Ocoee
to the region’s economic development, while balancing electricity and
environmental needs.”
TVA donated 12 days of releases on weekends from April 23 through
June 5, while the 2005 contract was being negotiated.
The Ocoee River Outfitters Association has set the schedule for the water
releases, and the schedule is posted on the TVA website at
http://www.tva.com/river/recreation/sched_ocoee3.htm.
Negotiations on a long-term contract for water releases on the Upper
Ocoee are continuing. “TVA is committed to working with Ocoee River
stakeholders to develop a responsible solution for sustainable rafting on this
section,” said Herrin.
TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that
serve approximately 8.5 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA
also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple
benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and
recreation.
