TVA Economic Development Efforts Recognized by Southern Business Magazine

May 1, 2006

NASHVILE, Tenn. - TVA Senior Vice President of Economic Development John Bradley and TVA Board member Bill Baxter have been recognized for their work in economic development by Southern Business & Development magazine.

The magazine’s 2006 winter issue cites Bradley for his efforts in making TVA’s Economic Development group “an economic development leader in the South” and names him one of the “Top 10 People Who Made a Difference.” The magazine says Baxter is “one of the South’s most impressive economic developers.”

The magazine’s publisher and editor, Mike Randle, also praised TVA’s Economic Development staff. “While Bradley is being named as one of the 10 people who made a difference this year, we could easily have given the recognition to the entire TVA economic development department,” he said.

Randle calls TVA the largest economic-development entity in the South, supporting economic development efforts in seven southern states. In fiscal year 2005, TVA’s economic development efforts helped attract or retain 57,000 Tennessee Valley jobs and generate more than $3.6 billion in capital investment.

Others selected for the magazine’s annual Top 10 People list include Carlos Ghosn, president & chief executive officer of Nissan; Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour and Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco (selected jointly in recognition of their challenges/ accomplishments following Hurricane Katrina); California-based developer and entrepreneur David Murdock; West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin III; Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher; Missouri Governor Matt Blunt; North Carolina Governor Mike Easley; Louisiana Commerce Secretary Mike Olivier; and Fred Humes, director of the Economic Development Partnership in Aiken, S.C.

Bradley joined TVA in 2002 with 23 years’ experience in economic development. Prior to joining TVA, Bradley spent six years at the Memphis Regional Chamber of Commerce as director, vice president and senior vice president of economic development.

Baxter, a former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, served as chairman of the TVA Board from June 2005 until March 31, 2006, when a new part-time Board took office under a change in governance. He continues to serve on the TVA Board.

Southern Business & Development magazine was founded in 1992 and is published quarterly. The magazine’s target audiences include site-selection consultants and company CEOs. It is available at www.sb-d.com.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financing with revenues of $7.8 billion in 2005. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.6 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
