Power Companies, Power Porkers Raise $3,500 for Charities
Mar. 15 , 2004
TUPELO, Miss. – More than 1,500 pounds of pork paid off in $3,500 for Lee County charities last week when area power providers and TVA’s Power Porkers put their grills to work.
Tombigbee Electric Power Association, Tupelo Light and Water and TVA joined forces to support the Link Centre, a building complex in the heart of Tupelo that houses a number of charity organizations. The charity organizations include the American Cancer Society, Girl Scouts of Northeast Mississippi, Family Health of North Mississippi and others, as well as civic organizations including the Tupelo Symphony Orchestra, Gum Tree Conservatory and Music With Me, plus a variety of church groups.
“We take our role as a community member seriously, and anytime we can help out like this, we are glad to do it,” said TVA General Manager Terry Kemp. “TVA was founded on the idea of improving the quality of life for residents of the Tennessee Valley, and we are still committed to that goal today.”
Tombigbee EPA, Tupelo Light and Water and TVA relied on more than 50 employee volunteers who sold tickets, cooked Boston butts and delivered meat. In a marathon overnight effort, the Power Porkers, TVA’s competitive cooking team, rolled in from Allen Fossil Plant in Memphis to prepare 175 Boston butts, which sold for $20 each.
“Since its foundation, the Link Centre has been helping its tenants change lives and improve the quality of life in the community,” Link Centre Director Amber Clemons said. “By working with the Centre, TVA is helping to ensure that essential resources are available to Tupelo and North Mississippi.”
TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.5 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
