TVA Identifies Preferred Route for Transmission Line

March 15, 2013

TUPELO, Miss. — The Tennessee Valley Authority has identified a preferred route for a new 16-mile transmission line, supporting TVA's commitment to provide safe, reliable and cleaner energy to the Tupelo area.

TVA is proposing to build a third connection between the Union and Tupelo substations to prevent overloading of the two existing lines during periods of heavy power demand.

The preferred route is the northern option, running from the 500-kilovolt Union Substation, north of County Road 251, east of Saltillo and connecting to Turner Industrial Park. About two-thirds of this route uses existing right of way or parallels existing lines. A map of the project and additional information is available. The preferred option is marked in green.

The selected route is expected to have the least impact on the area, based on comments from a September 2012 public meeting, as well as cost, engineering and environmental factors. A National Environmental Policy Act review is pending.

TVA will meet with property owners along the proposed right of way to obtain easements for construction, operation and maintenance of the line. Construction is scheduled to begin during the summer of 2015 and be completed in about a year.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is a corporate agency of the United States that provides electricity for business customers and local power distributors serving 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states. TVA receives no taxpayer funding, deriving virtually all of its revenues from sales of electricity. In addition to operating and investing its revenues in its electric system, TVA provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists local power companies and state and local governments with economic development and job creation.
