Fieldstone Resort and Marina Certified as Clean Marina

July 7, 2005

HIAWASSEE, Ga. – Fieldstone Resort and Marina on Chatuge Reservoir will soon fly a Clean Marina flag in recognition of the marina’s efforts to preserve and protect water quality in the Tennessee River system.

Fieldstone is the first marina on Chatuge and in the state of Georgia to receive the Clean Marina designation.

“Since Richard and Dana Pelham purchased Fieldstone Resort and Marina in 2002, environmental quality has been their goal,” said Linda Harris, TVA’s Clean Marina coordinator for Chatuge Reservoir. “In May 2004, Fieldstone was one of four resorts in Georgia to earn a Green Seal award for environmental practices, so when the Pelhams learned about the Tennessee Valley Clean Marina Initiative, they set their sights on becoming the first certified Clean Marina in Georgia. Their staff achieved the certification in less than six months, going well beyond the minimum requirements.”

Other efforts leading to Clean Marina certification include safe fuel management techniques, protecting shorelines from erosion, and providing educational information and learning opportunities for boaters. Clean marina programs help marinas protect water quality by encouraging marina-sponsored boater education and reducing water pollution and erosion.

”The expenses involved are minimal when you weigh them against the benefits of protecting Chatuge Reservoir,” said Fieldstone Resort Project Manager Greg Diehl. “Our livelihood depends upon a healthy lake, and taking a few extra steps to protect that health is a good investment in our future.”

Currently, 43 marinas in the Tennessee Valley have achieved the high environmental standards required for Clean Marina certification. For more information, click here.
