Browns Ferry Employees Pitch In to Help Katrina Evacuees

September 20, 2005

Citizens of two towns in Louisiana and Mississippi have employees at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant to thank for part of the Hurricane Katrina relief effort in their communities.

Shortly after Hurricane Katrina decimated hundreds of miles of coastline, TVA and Stone and Webster employees at Browns Ferry led a relief effort that resulted in the collection of enough supplies to fill 12-foot, 17-foot and 20-foot trailers. The employees then hauled the trailers to the town of Bogalusa, La., a town in need that had been largely missed by larger-scale relief efforts.

Additionally, thanks to contributions by Alabama businesses as well as numerous individuals, plans are in place for a group of employees from Browns Ferry to travel to Ocean Springs, Miss., where they will begin providing two hot meals per day to up to 200 people displaced by the storm.

“The response by our employees to this relief effort was outstanding,” said TVA President and Chief Operating Officer Tom Kilgore. “A special thanks goes to all those who helped organize and pull off this effort in such a short time and, of course, to everyone who made a donation.”

Throughout the Tennessee Valley, TVA employees have collected more than 3,500 cases of bottled water and nearly $27,000 in cash donations for people displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

In addition to donations, other TVA assistance includes helping restore transmission facilities, electrical-system damage assessments, debris removal and vegetation management, safety and security support, and providing fuel and various types of equipment.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.6 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
