TVA Regional Resource Stewardship Council To Meet in Knoxville

August 11, 2005

The Regional Resource Stewardship Council, created to advise TVA on the management of natural resources in the Tennessee Valley, will hear about several water quality improvement initiatives in the Tennessee Valley and review and discuss TVA’s recreation strategy when it meets Aug. 23-24 in Knoxville.

The council will hear presentations and see examples of water quality improvement efforts including TVA’s reservoir releases improvement program, water quality initiatives of the Izaak Walton League, Clean Marina efforts on Fontana Reservoir; and activities of the Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition and Little River Water Quality Forum.

In addition, the council will review, discuss and provide advice on TVA’s strategy for supporting recreation opportunities on the Tennessee River system. The council will meet in TVA’s West Tower Auditorium, and the meeting is open to the public.

The 20-member council was established in 2000 under the Federal Advisory Committee Act. Since the council convened for its third term in March, a new member has been added, replacing a member from Virginia who retired for health reasons. Don Gowan of Abingdon, Va., was appointed by Gov. Mark Warner and approved by the TVA Board. Gowan is the land protection manager for The Nature Conservancy in southwest Virginia, where he has worked for 15 years.

The council will meet from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24. A public comment period is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 24.

Anyone wanting to make comments at the meeting should register at the door. Speakers are asked to limit their remarks to no more than five minutes. Up to an hour will be allotted for public comments with participation available on a first-come, first-served basis. Hand-out materials should be limited to one printed page.

Written comments may be mailed to the Regional Resource Stewardship Council, TVA, 400 West Summit Hill Drive, WT 11A, Knoxville, Tenn. 37902-1499, or faxed to (865) 632-3146. Comments may be made directly to council members through the RRSC website, accessible at www.tva.com. For more information, call the council records officer at (865) 632-2333.
