TVA Economic Development Receives International AwardsSeptember 21, 2006 The International Economic Development Council, the world’s largest membership organization serving the economic development profession, has recognized the Tennessee Valley Authority for excellence in the design, execution and effectiveness of marketing communication tools to support economic development efforts in the seven-state TVA service area. TVA received top honors in the IEDC’s annual awards competition for TVAed.com in the category of General Purpose Website; TVAsites.com as the best among Special Purpose Websites; and the TVA Economic Development Report Card as the top entry in the Newspaper/Newsletter/Magazine category. TVA received the awards during the IEDC Annual Conference this week. “From localized community projects to large-scale endeavors, activities for the advancement of economic development have an enormous impact on the shoring up of the nation’s economy,” said Joseph A. Marinucci, IEDC chairman. “As our population grows and as we continue to overcome unexpected challenges, such as those we are still grappling with in the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged Gulf Coast region, these efforts take on an even greater significance. The award serves as a most respectful ‘hats off’ to economic development organizations like the Tennessee Valley Authority for leading the charge.” Marinucci cited TVA for meeting the demanding and challenging pace of today’s high-pressure, quick-response economic development activities by creating informational products that offer detailed information fast to grab the attention of site selectors and corporate executives. He also praised TVA for empowering smaller communities by providing access through its award-winning Web sites to important economic development tools that may have otherwise only been available only to more urban areas. He said that as a public power provider, TVA is accountable to the public it serves, and its quarterly Report Card is evidence of the health of the regional economy and TVA’s role in it. TVA Economic Development, working with distributor customers of TVA power, Valley communities, regional and state economic development partners, helped retain or attract 57,000 Valley jobs in fiscal year 2005 and generated more than $3.6 billion in capital investment. More information about TVA ED is available at TVAed.com. TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.6 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
