TVA Thanks Power Companies, Homeowners for 40,000 Home Energy Evaluations

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The In-Home Energy Evaluation program, offered by the Tennessee Valley Authority and local power companies, continues its steady growth in 2012 as residents look for ways to make their homes more energy efficient and lower their power bills.
The number of residential energy efficiency inspections under this popular TVA initiative reached more than 40,000 in May - up from 25,000 last July - and continues to grow.
Launched in March 2009, the In-Home Energy Evaluation program provides expert evaluations, recommendations and up to $500 reimbursement for home energy improvements. Annual savings under the program have grown to about 45 gigawatt-hours since the program began, enough to power more than 3,000 Tennessee Valley homes each year. About 19 gigawatt-hours in annual savings have been accumulated just in fiscal year 2012
Bob Balzar, TVA vice president for Energy Efficiency and Demand Response, said the energy savings help lower residential electric power bills, boost local economies, and trim peak power demand.

More than two-thirds of residents in the TVA program make home energy improvements after the evaluation. The national average is about 50 percent.
TVA’s EnergyRight Solutions suite of energy efficiency programs includes a broad portfolio of new and innovative initiatives for homes, business and industry. TVA achieved a 559 gigawatt-hour reduction in 2011 – a 270 percent increase over 2010. Combined energy savings of 765 gigawatt-hours in 2010 and 2011 equals enough energy to power almost 50,000 households for an entire year.
Energy efficiency produces zero emissions, meets demand immediately and helps lower power bills for Tennessee Valley consumers. With a typical delivery cost of 2-4 cents per kilowatt-hour, energy efficiency is among the cleanest and lowest cost, long-term expansion options available to help TVA meet its vision for more low cost, clean energy.
TVA’s energy efficiency path is supported by its energy roadmap to 2030 the Integrated Resource Plan.
“Energy efficiency is an important part of TVA’s plan to meet future energy demand,” Balzar said. “As one of the lowest cost options, it helps keep rates low, reduces maintenance costs and conserves natural resources.”
The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for business customers and distribution utilities that serve 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states at prices below the national average. TVA, which receives no taxpayer money and makes no profits, also provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists utilities and state and local governments with economic development.
