TVA Police, Nashville Detectives Use Internet to Recover Stolen Boat Motor

July 31, 2012

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Valley Authority Police, working with police detectives in Nashville and security officers at Gallatin Fossil Plant, have recovered a rescue boat and motor that were stolen from the plant a few weeks ago.

The boat, which is used by TVA in emergencies to rescue people from the Cumberland River, was stolen from the plant in Gallatin over the July 7-8 weekend.

The boat was found near the plant, but the motor was missing. A plant employee discovered a motor similar to the stolen one for sale on the Internet and reported it to plant security.

A plant security officer with TVA contractor Murray Guard contacted the Internet seller and arranged a meeting. Metro Nashville Police detectives and TVA Police personnel were waiting when the suspect pulled up with the stolen motor in his back seat.

Andrew Elliott, of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., was arrested and charged with felony theft of property in Davidson County.

“Not only was this an issue of property loss for TVA, but also a safety factor because that boat was intended to help people in an emergency,” said David Jolley, TVA vice president of Security and Emergency Management. “We are grateful to the employees at the plant who helped solve the case, and also to officers at Metro Nashville Police Department and Murray Guard for their help.”

The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for business customers and distribution utilities that serve 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states at prices below the national average. TVA, which receives no taxpayer money and makes no profits, also provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists utilities and state and local governments with economic development.
