TVA Asks for Comments on Proposed Transmission Line Project

August 29, 2012

TUPELO, Miss. – The Tennessee Valley Authority is seeking public comments on a transmission line project that would improve electric reliability in northeast Mississippi.

TVA is proposing to build an additional connection between two substations with a 12- to 15-mile transmission line. The 161-kilovolt line would extend from TVA’s existing 500-kilovolt Union Substation to the 161-kilovolt Turner Park Substation.

An existing 6.6-mile line from the Turner Park Substation to the 161-kilovolt Tupelo Substation would be used to complete the connection between the Union and Tupelo substations.

TVA is considering several possible line routes. Some of the routes under consideration would parallel existing lines. The rest of the line would be built using steel pole structures centered on a 100-foot right-of-way.

Public input is encouraged, beginning with an open house on Sept. 13, between 3 p.m.–7 p.m. CDT, at the BancorpSouth Conference Center (Sweet Gum Room), 387 East Main St., Tupelo, Miss.

Detailed maps showing the different locations for the possible power line will be available. TVA staff will be available to answer questions, discuss concerns and accept comments. More information is available at www.tva.com/power/projects.

To submit comments, contact TVA’s Chris Austin toll free at (800) 362-4355, by e-mail at newtransline@tva.com or by mail to: Chris Austin, Tennessee Valley Authority, 1101 Market St., MR 4G, Chattanooga, TN, 37402-2801. The deadline is Oct. 15.

The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for business customers and distribution utilities that serve 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states at prices below the national average. TVA, which receives no taxpayer money and makes no profits, also provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists utilities and state and local governments with economic development.
