TVA Donates to Proposed Coal Miners Memorial

August 23, 2013

DRAKESBORO, Ky.  - The Tennessee Valley Authority is donating $5,000 toward the creation of a Coal Miners Memorial in Muhlenberg County, Ky.

The proposed project will be located on the lawn of the Muhlenberg County Courthouse in Greenville. It will include bronze statues of coal miners, a large replica of coal, and plaques with the names of miners who lost their lives mining coal in the local area.

"We are excited TVA could join us in this effort because if it were not for TVA, the mining industry would not be in this area,” said Rick Newman, Muhlenberg County Judge Executive. “Paradise burns a considerable amount of coal and TVA is a major asset to our community. I always tell people, 'Hip, hip hooray for TVA.’”

TVA’s Paradise Fossil Plant, located on the Green River in Muhlenberg County, was completed in 1970 and has a capacity to produce more than 2,200 megawatts of reliable electric power. The plant consumes more than 20,000 tons of coal per day.

“TVA supports this project to honor the service and sacrifice of those families involved in the mining industry,” said Emily Reynolds, TVA senior vice president for Government Relations. “Throughout 80 years of progress at TVA, coal remains a valuable part of our balanced generation portfolio.”

The Tennessee Valley Authority is a corporate agency of the United States that provides electricity for business customers and local power distributors serving 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states. TVA receives no taxpayer funding, deriving virtually all of its revenues from sales of electricity. In addition to operating and investing its revenues in its electric system, TVA provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists local power companies and state and local governments with economic development and job creation.
