Hiwassee Dam Traffic Restricted to One Lane for Maintenance

September 18, 2003

MURPHY, N. C. – Traffic on State Route 1314 across TVA’s Hiwassee Dam will be restricted to one lane for the next six months beginning this week for maintenance on the dam’s spillway gates, such as sandblasting, cleaning, and painting.

Work on each of the four spillway gates will take approximately five to six weeks to complete.

A traffic-control system with a maximum three-minute wait will direct traffic across the dam throughout the six months. The roadway is expected to reopen with two lanes of traffic on March 15, 2004.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
