TVA to Lower Level of Little Bear Creek Reservoir

Aug. 25, 2003

RUSSELVILLE, Ala. – TVA will lower the water level of Little Bear Creek Reservoir approximately three feet this fall to allow vegetation to be planted along the shoreline.

The drawdown will begin September 2 and continue until the water reaches an elevation of 617 feet above sea level by mid-October.

The pool level will be maintained at 617 feet above sea level until mid-November, at which time the normal drawdown will continue so that winter pool, which is 608 feet above sea level, can be reached by December 15.

The drawdown was requested by the Little Bear Millennium Project for the purpose of planting winter wheat and rye grass on the exposed bank. The vegetation will increase the food supply for fish, benefit waterfowl populations, and help stabilize the shoreline.

The Little Bear Millennium Project is a community-based effort to enhance the health of the Little Bear Creek watershed. TVA is a partner in the project and is providing assistance with various habitat restoration projects.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer and is self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
