Allen Fossil Plant Wins TVA Environmental Excellence of
the Year Award
Nov. 5, 2003
MEMPHIS – Allen Fossil Plant has won the TVA Environmental
Excellence of the Year Award for its aggressive program to maximize power
plant performance while reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, which contributes
to the formation of ozone, as part of TVA’s clean air strategy.
“TVA has one of the nation’s most ambitious
clean air programs, and by the end of this decade TVA will have spent
almost $6 billion to
reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 85 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions
by 75 percent,” said TVA Chairman Glenn McCullough Jr. “We
commend the employees of Allen Fossil Plant for demonstrating their commitment
to environmental stewardship and for helping provide cleaner air for
the people of the Tennessee Valley.”
With its three selective catalytic reduction systems achieving
about 90 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions for the entire
ozone
season, Allen set a record for the lowest NOx emission rate for TVA’s
11 coal-fired plants.
Allen’s performance was accomplished through a collaborative effort
among the plant’s operations, maintenance, and plant engineering
departments.
As winner of the Environmental Excellence of the Year
Award, Allen Fossil Plant will select a worthy environmental project
or charity to receive
a $1,000 donation from TVA. All environmental award winners will receive
certificates, and team representatives will receive a framed print depicting
the Valley environment.
Environmental Excellence Awards are presented annually
to a TVA individual, team, site, facility, or organization that has demonstrated
exemplary
environmental
performance in support of one of TVA’s six environmental principles. Those
principles are: management commitment; environmental protection and stewardship;
environmental compliance; pollution prevention; partnerships/public involvement;
and innovation and technology.
Other winners are: the Transmission Power Supply Process
Improvement Team for Management Commitment; Spencer Boardman, a project
manager, for Environmental
Protection and Stewardship; the Fuel Byproducts Team for Pollution Prevention
and Control; Green Power Switch for Partnerships and Public Involvement;
and the Resource Management and Wetlands and Water Quality Team for Innovation
and Technology Advancement. Allen Fossil Plant also won the award in the category
of Environmental Compliance.
TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer and is completely self-financed.
TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve
8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
