TVA Employee Team Wins Environmental Excellence AwardDec. 12, 2003 CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A team of TVA employees who developed ways to protect environmental resources in transmission line construction have won a TVA Environmental Excellence Award for management commitment. Led by Joan Dodd of TVA’s Chattanooga office, the Transmission/ Power Supply Process Improvement Team changed the way TVA reviews new transmission lines. Before designing transmission lines, an environmental assessment is made of the property. Through the use of new technologies and improved processes, TVA is better able to determine if problems are anticipated involving wetlands, protected species or archaeological resources. Other members of the Process Improvement Team are Scot Eaves, Sam Holt, Byron Hulgan, M. Scott Jones, Don Knight, Allen Miller, Michael O’Connor, Don Provine, Ron Skelton, Doug Smith, Norman Steuer, Travis Terry, Doug Thomas and Dino Xoinis, all of Chattanooga. “Continuous efforts to integrate responsible environmental practices into business decisions, to comply with environmental laws and regulations, and to find new and better solutions for environmental and public protection have earned these employees this award,” said TVA Environmental Executive Kate Jackson. TVA Environmental Excellence Awards are presented annually to a TVA individual, team, site, facility or organization that has demonstrated exemplary environmental performance in support of one of TVA’s six environmental principles. Those principles are: management commitment; environmental protection and stewardship; environmental compliance; pollution prevention; partnerships/public involvement; and innovation and technology. All award winners received certificates, and Dodd received a framed print depicting the Valley environment. TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self- financed. It provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood control, navigation, water quality and recreation.
