Summit
Highlights Resources for Community and Economic Development
Dec. 9, 2003
CHATTANOOGA,
Tenn. — Sharing information on available federal programs and
resources is the purpose of the two-day Tennessee Valley Regional
Resources Summit, co-sponsored by TVA and Rural Development/U.S. Department
of Agriculture, which kicked off today in Chattanooga.
Communities in
the Tennessee Valley can partner with numerous regional, state and
federal agencies on economic development projects. The summit is designed
to improve those partnerships, and ensure maximum impact for capital investment
and technical assistance to Valley communities.
Along with TVA
and the USDA, representatives from the Appalachian Regional Commission,
Delta Regional Authority, Economic Development Administration,
Environmental
Protection Agency, and Housing and Urban Development will discuss their services
and programs at the summit.
“TVA’s
mission is to promote sustainable economic development, which means
more and better jobs for the people of the Tennessee Valley,” said
TVA Chairman Glenn McCullough Jr. “All the federal agencies on the
program are valuable allies, enhancing economic development, and improving
our quality
of life. It is essential that we find innovative and better ways to collaborate
on projects and leverage resources to maximize their effectiveness for
the people we serve.”
Since fiscal
year 2000, TVA and its partners have helped attract or retain more
than 190,000 jobs, with a capital investment of
more than $4.3 billion.
Since
1995, TVA has provided more than $150 million in economic development
loans for new and expanding industries.
TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed.
TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve
8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
