TVA Watershed Team Members Win Environmental Excellence Award

October 29, 2004

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Members of TVA’s Pickwick-Wheeler Watershed Team have won a TVA Environmental Excellence Award for their leadership in developing key partnerships with the local community.

North Alabama residents Kenneth Kelley, Jack Paul, Richard Pflueger and Damien Simbeck, part of the Pickwick-Wheeler Watershed Team, were selected for their outstanding work in developing local partnerships with the public to make improvements to the public trail system on the TVA Muscle Shoals and Wilson Dam Reservation.

Their efforts have led to the doubling of the paved portion of the trail, from 2.7 miles to 5.2 miles. In addition, the trail system has been designated as the central location for the western region of the newly established North Alabama Birding Trail. A public interpretative native plant garden was also established.

“Ken, Jack, Richard and Damien provided excellent guidance, technical expertise and encouragement to develop, plan and implement many important projects to enhance the trail system,” said TVA Environmental Executive Kate Jackson. “Their efforts have helped TVA develop solid partnerships with the local community to enhance the environmental education value of the Muscle Shoals Reservation.”

TVA Environmental Excellence Awards are presented annually to a TVA individual, team, site, facility or organization that has demonstrated exemplary environmental performance in support of one of TVA’s six environmental principles. Those principles are: management commitment, environmental protection and stewardship, environmental compliance, pollution prevention, partnerships/public involvement, and innovation and technology.

All award winners received certificates, and these members of the Pickwick-Wheeler Watershed Team share receipt of a framed print depicting the Valley environment.
