Mud Creek Wildlife Area Transferred to State

October 26, 2004

JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. - TVA and the Alabama Waterfowl Association have completed the Phillips Wildlife Demonstration Area project and turned the property over to the state of Alabama to be part of the Jackson County Mud Creek Wildlife Management Area.

The demonstration area project showcased benefits of restoring agricultural land to provide wildlife and waterfowl habitat, while improving water quality in the Mud Creek watershed.

The 80-acre Phillips property, formerly used for farming and now a mix of wetland and upland habitat, filters run-off before it enters Mud Creek. The filtering effect decreases the amount of sediment and pollution that enters the creek from such things as livestock waste and pesticides and fertilizers from adjacent lands.

Various types of native trees were replanted as part of the Phillips project, and AWA provided waterfowl and songbird nesting structures and seed for wildlife food plots. TVA provided the funding and technical assistance for the project.

AWA will transfer the property to the State of Alabama this month. The site will be managed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely selffinanced. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.5 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood control, navigation, water quality, water supply and recreation.
