Manufacturing Summit To Be Held in Nashville

October 20, 2005

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A state-wide conference to address opportunities in manufacturing and challenges facing Tennessee manufacturers will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the Sheraton Downtown Hotel in Nashville.

The 2005 Manufacturing Summit will bring together manufacturers, manufacturing advocates, local chambers of commerce, and local and state officials to discuss the state of manufacturing in Tennessee, how manufacturing is impacted by the global economy, and how to enhance and grow the state’s existing manufacturing community. Scheduled speakers at the one-day conference include Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen.

Tennessee’s economy relies heavily on a healthy manufacturing community. The manufacturing industry has more than 400,000 employees and represents 17 percent of the state’s gross product.

Sponsors of the conference include the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry, TVA, Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development and The University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services.

The UT Center for Industrial Services will present the first-ever Tennessee Shingo Award at the conference recognizing the successful efforts of a company to use principles of lean manufacturing and embrace world-class performance business practices.

Participants may register for the conference and find additional information by calling the Tennessee Chamber at (615) 256-5141 or by visiting www.tnchamber.org or www.TVAed.com.

Companies interested in competing for the 2006 Tennessee Shingo Award or learning more about lean manufacturing may attend a day-long continuing workshop following the Summit on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.6 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
