TVA Golf Tourney Raises More Than $1 Million for Children’s Home

December 29, 2005

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--TVA Nuclear employees have raised more than $1 million for the Children’s Home/Chambliss Shelter, its Partner-in-Education, over the past nine years through an annual golf tournament.

“We are amazed every year at the generosity of those who participate in this tournament,” said Chief Nuclear Officer and TVA Nuclear Executive Vice President Karl Singer. “We deeply appreciate all of our business partners for their involvement in these tournaments, as well as the many volunteers and participants who have helped make these fund-raisers so successful.”

This year’s tournament was the best ever, generating more than $209,800 in revenue for classroom supplies, training, field trips for the children and special educational programming, according to Singer. The 2005 tournament was held at Windstone Golf Club near Chattanooga, with 136 golfers participating.

The Children’s Home/Chambliss Shelter has been TVA Nuclear’s partner in education since 1996. However, nuclear employees provided informal support to the organization even before then.

The facility provides early childhood education and child care – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – for primarily low-income, single-parent families. It also serves as a residential program for abused and/or neglected children, ages 6 to 18, in crisis. In addition, the home/shelter recruits, trains and supports foster families and facilitates adoptions.

In addition to the annual benefit golf tournament, TVA nuclear employees host a Halloween event each year for the children and sponsor an angel tree with decorations that list items needed for the Children’s Home/Chambliss Shelter classrooms, such as books, puzzles and games.

“TVA Nuclear has become very critical to the success of the Children’s Home/Chambliss Shelter,” said Phil Acord, the home/shelter’s president and chief executive officer. “In addition to time and effort contributed by TVA employees, funding from the golf tournament provides an opportunity to improve every facet of what we do, as well as support special programs for the children. I firmly believe this support is largely responsible for our attaining and retaining the state’s Three Star status, which is the highest status awarded to child-care centers from the Tennessee State Department of Licensing.”

TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.6 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
