10th Annual TVA Nuclear Golf Tourney Raises More Than $204,000 for Children’s Home
October 23, 2006
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--TVA Nuclear employees raised more than $204,000 for the Children’s Home/Chambliss Shelter, its Partner-in-Education, at the 10th annual benefit golf tournament held this month.
“Over the past 10 years, we have raised more than $1.2 million to help those served by the Children’s Home/Chambliss Shelter,” said Chief Nuclear Officer and TVA Nuclear Executive Vice President Karl Singer. “The generosity of those who participate in the tournament is amazing, and we truly appreciate their support, as well as the many volunteers who have helped make these events so successful.”
“I cannot imagine where we would be without the kindness and compassion continuously shown by TVA employees and the TVA Nuclear organization,” said Phil Acord, president and chief executive officer of Children’s Home/Chambliss Shelter. “For the past 12 years, TVA employees have volunteered for a host of activities, including the annual TVA Day of Caring, special holiday events, and mentoring our employees as well as tutoring our children. We are truly blessed and have become a better organization because of TVA.”
The money generated in this year’s tournament will be used for classroom supplies, training, field trips for the children and special educational programming, according to Singer. The 2006 tournament was held earlier this month at Windstone Golf Club near Chattanooga, with 136 golfers participating.
The Children’s Home/Chambliss Shelter has been TVA Nuclear’s partner in education since 1996. However, nuclear employees provided informal support to the organization even before then.
The facility provides early childhood education and child care – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – for primarily low-income, single-parent families. It also serves as a residential program for abused and/or neglected children, ages 6 to 18, in crisis. In addition, the home/shelter recruits, trains and supports foster families and facilitates adoptions.
In addition to the annual benefit golf tournament, TVA Nuclear employees host a Halloween event each year for the children and sponsor an angel tree with decorations that list items needed for the Children’s Home/Chambliss Shelter classrooms, such as books, puzzles and games.
TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.6 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
