Sequoyah Nuclear Plant Completes Record-Setting Year

November 1, 2006

SODDY DAISY, Tenn. – TVA’s Sequoyah Nuclear Plant produced nearly 19 million megawatt-hours of electricity during the 2006 fiscal year – the most power ever generated by the plant during a fiscal year.

That is enough power to serve three cities the size of Chattanooga for a year. The two units at Sequoyah also set a generation record for a TVA Nuclear two-unit operation for the fiscal year.

Overall, TVA’s three nuclear power plants—Browns Ferry, Sequoyah and Watts Bar— produced more than 45.3 million MWH during the 2006 fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30.

“Significant effort has gone into implementing a successful turnaround at the plant, and we are now seeing the results of several years of hard work,” said TVA Chief Nuclear Officer Karl Singer. “Sequoyah’s record-setting generation this year proves that our long-term commitment to improving plant operations is paying off. Sequoyah’s dedication to improving performance and focus on safety demonstrates the standard for all TVA nuclear plants in the pursuit of our mission to safely generate reliable, low-cost power for the Tennessee Valley.”

In 2005, Sequoyah produced more than 18.9 million MWH of electricity, setting a calendar- year generation record, and Sequoyah Unit 1 generated more than 10 million MWH, a first for a TVA nuclear unit.

“The credit for the record-setting performance at Sequoyah goes to the employees, who are continually looking for safer, better and more precise ways to complete their work,” said Sequoyah Vice President Randy Douet. “We will continue to follow the detailed plans that we have developed to ensure the plant is operated and maintained with a safety-first philosophy. Through these plans and our employees’ commitment to excellence, we will help TVA Nuclear achieve its vision to be the best multi-site operator in the world.”

TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 8.6 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
