Superior Performance
In 2004, TVA nuclear plants generated a record 47,075,964 megawatt-hours of electricity — more than enough for every household in the TVA service area. And TVA Nuclear has resolved to contribute even more to the company’s success in the future.
TVAN will add value to TVA’s power program by further increasing the reliability of the units while maintaining the most important objective of operating them safely. The key to accomplishing this is the Focus on the Four, which relates to four key performance areas: industrial and radiological safety, excellence in human performance, intolerance for equipment deficiencies, and equipment reliability.
In May 2005, TVAN was recognized by the nuclear power industry for developing an index of 20 performance indicators that can lead to improved plant reliability and performance. For their efforts, TVA Nuclear employees were presented with a Nuclear Energy Institute 2005 Top Industry Practice Award, which is the U.S. nuclear industry’s highest recognition of excellence. The 20 indicators that make up the index focus on improving equipment performance, improving adherence to schedule, reducing the backlog of maintenance projects, and resolving equipment reliability issues.
TVAN recognizes that excellence isn’t just a one-time success story or the awards it receives; it’s an ongoing process of refining behavior and competencies. That’s why TVAN employees are continuing their Focus on the Four: to keep the performance level of the nuclear program high and the goal of becoming the best in the world in reach.
