In full swing:

2009 camping season

As the warm weather arrives in the Tennessee Valley, so do the campers. And family fun at TVA recreation areas remains one of the best deals around.

When Honeycomb Campground on Guntersville Reservoir reopens this summer, visitors will notice numerous improvements, including new picnic tables, grills, and trash cans; renovations to the bathhouses; modifications to improve accessibility; and utility upgrades.

Fees for campsites with water and electric hookups are $20 per day, except for eight sites at Melton Hill Campground that also include sewer service and are $24 per day. Sites without hookups are $16 per day.

Holders of America-the-Beautiful Senior and Access Passes or Golden Age and Golden Access Passports receive a 50-percent discount on daily camping fees. To purchase a Senior or Access Pass, visit the National Park Service’s National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass Web site.

A new courtesy pier below Tellico Dam will make it easier for boaters to get in and out of their boats this summer.

Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. All sites are available for up to seven days, and some sites are available for up to 21 days. Six campgrounds — Cherokee Dam, Foster Falls, Melton Hill, Loyston Point, Barton Springs, and Mallard Creek — also have non-waterfront sites available for monthly rental. You may stay in these sites all summer as long as fees are paid 30 days in advance.

TVA also operates about 90 day-use recreation areas and boat launch ramps throughout the Tennessee Valley. These facilities are free to the public and open year-round. They provide trails, picnic areas, overlooks, beaches, swimming areas, fishing access, and wildlife viewing. Picnic pavilions, which are available at many day-use areas, may be reserved for $50 by calling TVA toll-free at 866-494-7186. Read more.
