Business Training

Learning how power is generated, transmitted, and distributed at TVA’s dams helps employees to think strategically.

Restructuring of the electric utility industry and the resulting increase in competition have forced us to abandon the paternalistic model—in which few employees fret about the business—for one that encourages every member of our workforce to think strategically. Lean staffing levels and fewer layers of management mean that important decisions must be made at all levels of TVA’s workforce.

Consequently, cultivating business skills and knowledge has taken center stage at TVA. The course described below helps serve that purpose.

Electric Utility System Operation

It could be called “Utility Electrical Engineering for the Non-Engineer.” For those who have little or no understanding of how an electric utility operates, this course provides a comprehensive introduction. Using a practical approach grounded in basic theory, it covers generation, transmission, and distribution while integrating the equipment and operational aspects of a utility.
