Going Green Pays Off
How Goodrich Tullahoma Uses TVA’s Green Power Switch Program to Maximize Its Environmental Efforts.
- When Goodrich Tullahoma landed its aerospace operations in the Tennessee Valley in 2008 it invested in 500 blocks of Green Power Switch.
- In 2009, the company doubled that investment to 1,000 blocks of Green Power Switch.
- To offset the cost of participating in the program, Goodrich invested in energy efficiency improvements suggested by a TVA energy audit.
- The powerful package was noticed—the company won the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Top Environmental Excellence Award.
Goodrich Corporation, a Fortune 500 company with a 140-year history, is a leading global supplier of systems and services to the aerospace and defense industry. One of its landing gear manufacturing operations is located in Tullahoma, Tenn. As part of the plant’s mission to care for the environment and to be a good corporate citizen, Goodrich Tullahoma decided to participate in TVA’s Green Power Switch program, investing in the year 2008 in 500 blocks.
The following year, environmental goals increased, and so did Goodrich’s investment in Green Power Switch—the company doubled its investment to 1,000 blocks.
The thinking was simple, says Joe Pannell, maintenance and facilities manager at the plant. “If we do this, it will send a message to employees and to the community to go green,” he explains. “Every company ought to help the best they can. This is all going for a good cause and we’ll see the benefits of it in the future.”
To counter the additional cost of more Green Power Switch blocks, Goodrich invested in energy efficiency improvements. A TVA Comprehensive Services Program energy audit in 2008 found ways to save the landing gear business $136,000 per year. The combination of energy efficiency and investment in green power made for a powerful package.
Goodrich’s forward-thinking attitude was definitely noticed. The company was awarded the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s 2008 Top Environmental Excellence Award. And in 2010 the business was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a member of their Green Power Partnership.
With its commitment to green power and energy efficiency, there’s no telling how high Goodrich Tullahoma will fly.
