Mine Plan Approval for Illinois Coal Mineral Rights Lease, Sugar Camp Mine No. 1

Franklin and Hamilton Counties, Illinois

Sugar Camp Energy LLC has requested TVA approval of proposed underground mining of TVA-owned coal reserves underlying a 2,250-acre area in Franklin and Hamilton counties, Illinois. This action would expand the Sugar Camp Energy Mine No. 1 (Illinois Mine Permit No. 382) into a lease area known as the Viking District #2. The mine expansion would require construction of a bleeder shaft with above-ground facilities on 5.3 acres and the installation of utilities along a 1.7-mile corridor. This expansion was approved by the State of Illinois in November 2017.

In 2011, TVA approved Sugar Camp Energy’s plan for Mine No. 1 to mine coal from approximately 2,600-acre portion of the TVA holdings. In 2013, TVA approved a mine expansion to allow Sugar Camp Energy to mine additional coal reserves underlying an 880.3-acre area.

TVA has completed an Environmental Assessment to review the further expansion of underground mining into the Viking District #2 and issued a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) on November 8, 2018.
