Transmission System Vegetation Management Program

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is preparing a programmatic environmental impact statement (PEIS) to programmatically address the impacts of system-wide vegetation management practices along its rights-of-way (“ROW”).  TVA is responsible for maintaining a network of more than 16,000 miles of electric transmission lines and about 500 power stations. This electric transmission system operates in seven states of the mid-south identified as the TVA power service area.

The TVA power service area offers a great diversity of vegetation (from trees to brush to grasses).  Vegetation can interfere with electric power flow, pose safety issues for TVA and members of the public, or interfere with our ability to maintain our system.  To ensure that electric service to the public is not disrupted by outages on its transmission lines, TVA must keep vegetation away from the electric power facilities as well as control noxious weeds at our facilities.  TVA’s vegetation management program would be a policy providing direction for managing vegetation through the TVA power service area.

More information on TVA’s Transmission System and current Vegetation Management can be found here.

Public Involvement

The Notice of Intent to prepare a PEIS was published in the Federal Register on January 23, 2017.  Public comments on the scope of the PEIS were collected from January 23, 2017 through April 1, 2017 and were considered during the PEIS development.

TVA released the draft PEIS for public comment on August 8, 2018 and a Federal Register Notice of Availability was published on August 17, 2018.  TVA is requesting comments on the PEIS between August 13, 2018 and October 1, 2018.

TVA plans to release the Final PEIS during the first half of 2019.
