Congress Recognizes Norris Dam’s 80th Anniversary

On July 7, U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander and U.S. Rep. John Duncan Jr. introduced a resolution praising TVA for its successful construction and management of the “Unified Plan of the Development of the Tennessee River,” which began with the completion of Norris Dam in 1936. It was the first dam constructed by TVA on the Tennessee River system.

JULY 7, 2016—“Today, we celebrate TVA’s long and proud history of service to the Tennessee Valley region,” Alexander said. “TVA was created to provide low-cost electricity, promote economic development, and invest in environmental stewardship, and that is exactly what TVA has done. I congratulate TVA for its work to control flooding and improve navigation of the Tennessee River system over the past 80 years, which started at Norris Dam.”

Representative Duncan had similar praise for the work of TVA and its key contributions to the people of the Valley.

“TVA has been a positive influence to East Tennessee since its inception in 1933,” Duncan said. “Employing many poverty-stricken Tennesseans in the wake of the Great Depression, TVA has been a staple to the region and the country. Their effort to provide low-cost power to the region is a strong factor in why more and more people, and businesses, are relocating to East Tennessee.”

The resolution, co-sponsored by 16 other senators and representatives, comes just a few weeks before TVA and the residents of the Valley celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Norris Dam with special family-friendly activities July 29 and July 30, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The two-day event will include tours of the dam, displays of a TVA transmission truck and helicopter, educational demonstrations by “Dr. Energy,” a sponsored race, food trucks, live music and more.

“TVA appreciates the support of the Valley congressional delegation and their recognition of the 80th anniversary of Norris Dam,” said Justin Maierhofer, vice president of Government Relations. “Their continued support of the work we do at TVA helps us to continue making a difference for the nine million residents of the Valley.”
