TVA’s Sequoyah Nuclear Plant Unit 2 Offline

March 03, 2015

The Tennessee Valley Authority’s Sequoyah Nuclear Plant Unit 2 automatically shut down at 6:45 a.m. EST on Monday, March 2, after an electrical issue caused the unit’s power generation system to shut down. Plant equipment responded as designed and station operators responded appropriately during the shutdown. As a result, there was no safety impact to the public or to plant employees.

The unit remains offline and in a safe configuration as company technical experts work to determine the cause of the issue. Sequoyah’s Unit 1 was not affected and continues to produce electricity.

All federal, state and county agencies have been notified.

Sequoyah Nuclear Plant is located on Chickamauga Reservoir in Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee. The plant’s two pressurized water reactors can supply some 2,300 megawatts of carbon-free electricity, enough energy to meet the needs of about 1.3 million homes a day.
