TVA Announces Location of Proposed Transmission Line in Shady Grove

July 29, 2019

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ― The Tennessee Valley Authority has identified a preferred route for a new transmission line that would provide power for growing load and increase power reliability in the Shady Grove area of Clarksville.

TVA will build 5.5 miles of transmission line to serve a substation being rebuilt by Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation. The new line, the majority of which would use existing right of way, would begin at TVA’s Montgomery-Clarksville No. 3 161-kilovolt transmission line northeast of the Interstate 24 and Highway 76 interchange. From there, the line would head south to the rebuilt Shady Grove substation on Durham Road.

The selected route is expected to have the least impact on the area, based on public input from the open house and additional evaluation of other factors, including social, environmental and engineering impacts. A National Environmental Policy Act review is also pending.

For 1.4 miles, TVA would rebuild an existing CEMC line to double-circuit. For about 3 miles, an additional 75 feet of width would be purchased adjacent to existing 100-foot-wide CEMC right of way. The remaining 1.1 miles would be built using single, steel poles centered on new 100-foot-wide right of way. TVA will meet with property owners along the proposed right of way to obtain easements for construction, operation and maintenance of the line. Property owners would still own the property and be compensated for the easements at fair market value.

TVA is expected to begin surveys in fall 2019 and start acquiring easements in fall 2020. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2021 and be completed in summer 2021.

A map of the project and additional information are available on the TVA website at www.tva.com/transmissionprojects.

TVA is investing $2.2 billion Valley-wide in transmission system improvements over five years to continue our mission of providing low cost, reliable power. To learn more about TVA and its 86-year mission of service to the Tennessee Valley, click here.
