TVA Asks for Comments on Proposed Transmission Project Near Memphis

July 25, 2018

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Tennessee Valley Authority is asking the public for input about upgrades to its transmission system, which involves a new transmission line in the Memphis metro area to increase power reliability and maximize the generation from the new Allen Combined Cycle Plant.

TVA is proposing to build 2.7 miles of double-circuit transmission line from the existing Allen Fossil Plant-Horn Lake 161-kV transmission line near the Tennessee/Mississippi state line to provide power to the existing Freeport Substation on E. Windsor Road in Memphis. The line would be built using double-pole steel structures centered on new 100-foot-wide right of way. Several alternate line routes are under consideration.

TVA is investing over $62 million in transmission projects in the area in addition to the $1 billion investment in the Allen Combined Cycle Plant. TVA continues to invest in the Memphis area to deliver reliable power to the region’s electric system to support economic and community development efforts and lower electric rates which are now 2 percent below 2013 levels.

Public input is encouraged, beginning with an open house from 3 to 7 p.m. CDT on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at the Comfort Suites — Magnolia Room, 7075 Moore Drive, Southaven, Mississippi.

Detailed maps showing the different locations being considered for the proposed transmission line will be available. TVA staff will answer questions, discuss concerns and receive comments. More information is available at https://www.tva.com/transmissionprojects.

The public may also submit comments by contacting TVA’s Todd Moore toll free at 800-362-4355, by email at newtransline@tva.gov or by mail to: Todd Moore, Tennessee Valley Authority, 1101 Market St., MR 4G, Chattanooga, TN, 37402-2801. The deadline for comments is September 4, 2018.
