TVA Identifies Preferred Route for Ala. Transmission Line

May 13, 2015

TRINITY, Ala. ― The Tennessee Valley Authority has identified a preferred route for a new transmission line that would provide power for growing industrial load and greater reliability in the Trinity and west Decatur areas served by Joe Wheeler Electric Membership Corporation.

TVA will build a 1.6-mile, 161-kilovolt line beginning at the Trinity-Wilson 161-kV transmission line just north of County Road 361. The line would extend generally to the north, crossing Mountain Home Road and ending at the new Joe Wheeler EMC substation east of County Road 431. The preferred route consists of the eastern most tap point and a combination of route segment Nos. 1, 3 and 10, which were identified at a public open house in December 2014.

The selected route is expected to have the least impact on the area, based on public input from the open house and additional evaluation of other factors, including social, environmental and engineering impacts. A National Environmental Policy Act review is pending.

TVA will meet with property owners along the proposed right of way to obtain easements for construction, operation and maintenance of the line. Property owners will be compensated for the easements at fair market value and retain ownership of the property.

TVA is expected to begin surveys in fall 2016 and start acquiring easements in winter 2017. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2017 and be completed by November 2017.

A map of the project and additional information are available on the TVA website.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is a corporate agency of the United States that provides electricity for business customers and local power companies serving nine million people in parts of seven southeastern states. TVA receives no taxpayer funding, deriving virtually all of its revenues from sales of electricity. In addition to operating and investing its revenues in its electric system, TVA provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists local power companies and state and local governments with economic development and job creation.
