TVA Identifies Preferred Route for Miss. Transmission Line

January 26, 2015

BATESVILLE, Miss. – The Tennessee Valley Authority has identified a preferred route for a new transmission line that would increase power reliability and allow for growth in the area served by Tallahatchie Valley Electric Power Association.

Tallahatchie Valley EPA plans to build the West Charleston 161-kV Substation in Charleston, Mississippi. TVA’s new line would tie into the Batesville-West Batesville 161-kV transmission line at the West Batesville 161-kV Substation and continue south to Tallahatchie Valley EPA’s new substation and then northeast to the North Oakland Substation. The preferred route consists of segment numbers 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 24, 27, and 31, as presented at two open houses in July 2014.

The selected route is expected to have the least impact on the area, based on public input from the open houses and additional evaluation of other factors, including social, environmental and engineering impacts. A National Environmental Policy Act review is pending.

The project will require new right of way. TVA will meet with property owners along the proposed right of way to obtain easements for construction, operation and maintenance of the line. Property owners would still own the property and be compensated for the easements at fair market value.

TVA is expected to begin surveys in spring 2015 and start acquiring easements in summer 2015. Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2018 and be completed by January 2020.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is a corporate agency of the United States that provides electricity for business customers and local power companies serving nine million people in parts of seven southeastern states. TVA receives no taxpayer funding, deriving virtually all of its revenues from sales of electricity. In addition to operating and investing its revenues in its electric system, TVA provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists local power companies and state and local governments with economic development and job creation.
