Small modular reactors (SMRs) require less space and are more flexible than a traditional nuclear plant, yet they offer enormous power capabilities. They improve safety and security, because they are below ground. Their smaller footprint means they can be built more quickly, are easier to operate and better fit into the landscape due to their compact size.
We are committed to working with partners and investing in the future of nuclear. In 2019, we became the first utility in the nation to successfully obtain approval for an early site permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to potentially construct and operate small modular reactors at the Clinch River Nuclear site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
