Electric car charging


Energy utilization, one of TVA’s three signature technology areas of emphasis, focuses on technologies that can lead to new and potentially more efficient ways of using electricity in residential, commercial and industrial settings, and in the transportation sector. 

TVA is working to develop and maintain a pipeline of emerging energy efficiency and demand response technologies for market and program readiness. TVA’s efforts are directed toward demonstrating and validating the performance and reliability of new energy efficient technologies and assessing their value to consumers and utilities. 

Additionally, TVA is conducting demonstrations to support the development of a business case and roadmap for an electric vehicle infrastructure.

Current initiatives include:

  • TVA is partnering in a nationwide utility collaboration evaluating six hyper-efficient technologies for residential and commercial applications, including ductless heat pumps and air conditioners, and heat pump water heaters for homes, and variable capacity air conditioning, LED street and area lighting, and efficient data centers for the commercial sector.
  • TVA uses seven test houses in Knoxville to evaluate residential building techniques, energy efficiency, demand response technologies, and consumer smart grid concepts in a controlled, simulated occupancy research environment. Test results are being used to educate builders, developers and consumers.
  • TVA is conducting a comparative field test to evaluate the energy and demand savings potential of grid-enabled residential appliances in 20 test homes.
  • TVA coordinates investment and activities with the Electric Power Research Institute and industry stakeholders to support plug-in electric vehicle grid integration and readiness, including assessing vehicle charging impacts, consumer behavior and infrastructure development.
