Both Lanes of Hiwassee Dam Road Closed August 8
HIWASEE, N.C. — Work by the Tennessee Valley Authority will require closure of both lanes of the access road over Hiwassee Dam from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
The closure of both lanes is required to allow crews to perform continuing maintenance work on part of the dam’s spillway gate mechanism. The road had previously had only one lane closed to traffic. The full closure will remain in effect for Wednesday only, and then one lane will be re-opened. Signs will be placed at both ends of the road to alert motorists.
The closure is part of the ongoing project to refurbish the dam’s spillway hoist car, a 40-ton capacity auxiliary spillway gate lifting device. The work includes disassembling the car to inspect and replace gaskets, seals, lubricants, gearboxes and other components. The project is scheduled for completion by Aug. 17.
During the work period, motorists should exercise caution when crossing the dam and expect delays. TVA appreciates the public’s understanding. In the event of inclement weather, the work may be extended or rescheduled.
