JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. ― Brian Noland, of Johnson City, Tenn., today officially assumed his role as a member of the Tennessee Valley Authority board of directors after taking the oath of office in Johnson City. His term will expire on May 18, 2024.

Noland was nominated by President Donald Trump on Jan. 28, 2020, and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Dec. 20.

“TVA’s mission of service ultimately comes down to making the lives of nearly 10 million people better,” said Noland. “As an educator, that goal resonates with me and I am honored to join the TVA team in helping achieve that end.”

Noland joined East Tennessee State University as its ninth president in 2012 after previously serving as the chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education System. In 2018, he was elected to the board of directors for the American Council on Education and also serves on the boards of a number of other educational and civic organizations, as well as an Institute of Higher Education fellow at the University of Georgia.

Noland holds a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee, and both master’s and bachelor’s degrees from West Virginia University.

Noland will join current Board Chair John Ryder of Memphis, Tenn., and Directors Kenneth Allen of White Plains, Ky., A.D. Frazier, of Mineral Bluff, Ga., Bill Kilbride of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Jeff W. Smith of Knoxville, Tenn., as well as recently confirmed new board member Beth Harwell of Nashville, Tenn., at the board’s next meeting on Feb. 11, 2021.
