Road Across Hiwassee Dam Reduced to One Lane Beginning July 23
HIWASEE, N.C. — The Tennessee Valley Authority will close one lane of the access road over Hiwassee Dam beginning Monday, July 23, to allow crews to perform maintenance work on part of the dam’s spillway gate mechanism.
The lane closure will remain in effect for the duration of the project, which is scheduled for completion by August 17. Signs will be placed at both ends of the road to alert motorists.
The project will refurbish the dam’s spillway hoist car and a 40-ton capacity auxiliary spillway gate lifting device. Work will include disassembling the car to inspect and replace gaskets, seals, lubricants, gearboxes and other components.
During the work period, motorists should exercise caution when crossing the dam and expect delays. TVA appreciates the public’s understanding. In the event of inclement weather, the work may be extended or rescheduled.
