KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The beach area near TVA’s Tellico Dam in Lenoir City will be closed the week of Aug. 19 as TVA performs a routine health check at the dam to ensure it is performing as intended.
TVA is conducting a subsurface investigation of the Tellico Dam embankment and underlying foundation rock using geophysical testing. The work will use non-intrusive investigation methods and allow engineers and geologists to efficiently assess the dam’s geology. The work is part of the ongoing routine health checks program performed by TVA’s Dam Safety organization at all TVA dams.
The beach is scheduled to be reopened Sunday, Aug. 25, depending on weather. Fieldwork at the dam is scheduled to continue through Sept. 13.
During the work, equipment used for the land surveys will be visible to the public, including pickup trucks and all-terrain vehicles used to deploy geophysical lines and to mount seismic source equipment. Yellow caution tape and work zone signage will be placed at the site to isolate the work area. During this work, pedestrians in the area should stay aware of surroundings, watch for changes around the trail, obey detours and directional signage, and not cross work barriers at any time.
