TVA Announces Alternative Preferred to Demolish Former Johnsonville Fossil Plant
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Valley Authority is moving forward with plans to demolish the former Johnsonville Fossil Plant in Humphreys County, Tennessee, following a study on the potential environmental impacts of various options for the site.
TVA retired all ten units of the coal-fired plant gradually beginning in 2012, with the final four units retired at the end of 2017.
TVA conducted an Environmental Assessment to consider the potential effects of various options for the site, including maintaining the structures and equipment, selected demolition of certain structures, and demolition of the entire plant. TVA’s preferred alternative is to demolish the site and other structures to three feet below final grade. TVA will decide how to remove the stacks during the deconstruction process.
The final Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact are available at www.tva.com/nepa.
TVA is in the process of making decisions about the future of coal ash and other coal combustion residuals stored at the site.
