TVA to Build New Dry Storage for Coal Ash at Cumberland Fossil Plant
CUMBERLAND CITY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Valley Authority is planning for future operations at Cumberland Fossil Plant with the construction of a bottom ash dewatering facility, new process water basins and a new dry storage landfill for coal ash and other coal combustion residuals produced at the plant.
After a lengthy public process to consider various alternatives for CCR management and storage at Cumberland, TVA announced a preferred alternative on April 20, 2018. TVA has elected to move forward with a portion of the preferred alternative by constructing a bottom ash dewatering facility, new process water basins and an onsite landfill for CCR storage. Those projects are part of a Record of Decision published in the Federal Register.
TVA’s decision involves removing CCR from part of a large ash impoundment and temporarily staging it within the footprint of the existing impoundment while TVA further considers permanent disposal options for the material.
The new dry storage landfill will be built on a portion of TVA property, eliminating the need for transport on public roadways. The project is part of TVA’s overall commitment to move from wet to dry storage of coal ash and other CCRs at all our coal-fired plants.
The Record of Decision and related documents are available on TVA’s website at www.tva.gov/nepa.
